Shopaholic Takes Manhattan – Sophie KinsellaNew York Times Bestselling Author Has Done it Again
In this hilarious follow up to Confessions of a Shopaholic, Becky Bloomwood and her credit cards are headed across the Atlantic.
A hilarious read, Shopaholic Takes Manhattan follows Rebecca Bloomwood or “Bex” from her UK home to New York where she confronts her biggest problem yet: shopping. SummaryWith her new found motto: “You can’t make money unless you spend it first,” Bex is investing her hard earned cash on Vera Wang gowns, designer shoes and hand bags. Things get a little too far when she gets introduced to the sample sale by a friend in New York. Although Bex has a bit of difficulty handling the foreign currency, this doesn’t stop her from spending more. According to Bex, a new pair of shoes is an investment. With Bex’s financial guru credentials, there’s no reasoning with her. When she followed Luke to New York, she never expected to be faced with so many obstacles. With Luke working 24-7, and left to her own devices, Bex would rather explore the shops than the city. And her shopping sprees don’t help with the bills accumulating left and right. Soon enough Bex finds out that her finance slot on Morning Coffee is on the line. When an expose from the Daily World uncovers her spending habits, Bex discovers that all too quickly things could turn bad. From landing her dream job in the States and even finding herself heading to Hollywood, Bex realizes too late that even her stable job could be on the line. On top of things, Luke abandons her. Shocked and humiliated, Bex returns to London to fend for herself. Jobless, loveless, and rudely awakened by the expose, Bex realizes she might have a problem. Bex’s a Liar? The heroine to Shopaholics, is a bevy liar. With her out of this world reasoning, she had gotten herself out a good many scrap with her grand logic. But for most of the story all she does is lie. If you’re in a stable relationship like Bex is, it’s going to be really hard to trust someone who’s lying all the time. But the way Kinsella portrays Bex, this works. Bex is just being her charming old self. Luke understands where Bex is coming from until he finds out that she has been lying all this time about her spending habits. He wouldn’t have minded so much if it weren’t for the future of his company was at sake. Luke blows up and suddenly his and Bex’s relationship are on the rocks. Bex’s Day Job and ShoppingAny nut could see that Bex’s job is all wrong for her. Although good at what she’s doing as a financial analysis at Morning Coffee, it doesn’t seem to fit Bex. As the story progresses, we find out more and more Bex is ready for a better job that is more appropriate for her great sense of style. Getting canned for a job that never suited her and now living in her dream city—life never seemed better. Kinsella, Sophie Shopaholic Takes Manhattan The Dial Press 2002 978-0-385-33588-1
